Are you one of those lovely ladies that turn up for a workout at the gym fully made-up, looking like you’re ready for a night on the town rather than a date with the treadmill? Come on; admit it, we’re all guilty of it, particularly if you go straight from work. I’ll hold my hands up and say that used to be me too, for many years. Well, STOP, right this minute and here’s why.

You’ll stop the detox. Sweating not only provides a way for the body to cool itself down but it’s also detoxifying. When you exercise the pores of your skin relax and open to release sweat. If you’re wearing make-up though (and yes, even a really good brand, stop making excuses) you make it nigh on impossible for those pesky toxins to escape.

If that’s not enough to convince you, it gets worse.

Your skin will breakout. When your pores open the make-up you spent time so carefully applying will seep in, clogging them, increasing the likelihood that you’re skin will breakout with spots and blackheads as a mark of protest. Yuk!

You’ll get a streaky face. You’re sweating profusely and you’ve just reached that 10k mark (we can all pretend), you reach for your towel to your wipe your brow. Yes, you know what’s coming, one swipe and a smear of make-up soils the once perfectly white towel (your gym so kindly provided) leaving a John McEnroe style headband streak of make-up free skin right across your forehead. Just gorgeous, a great look!

So how should you do to prepare your skin for burn out Usain Bolt would be proud of?

Gym skin prep. When you exercise your body produces free radicals so cleanse your skin first and apply a light, easily absorbed serum. Ideally one jam-packed full of antioxidants which will help to offset the little blighters. Two that I love are Skin Guru’s Nourishing Facial Serum or The Organic Pharmacy’s Antioxidant Face Firming Serum. After your workout, lightly cleanse the skin again (being careful not to overstress it) and apply your moisturiser as normal.

So next time you make a date to sweat, leave your make-up bag at home and bare all, your skin will definitely thank you for it.
