Zoya big

I don’t know about you but I love wearing nail varnish. It makes me feel good. An instant ‘cheer me up’. I also carry a big selection of colours in my kit, as hands often are called into shot. So, you get the picture, I use it a lot.

I therefore don’t want to hear that most brands on the market contain the same fumey crap that’s used to make car paint. Yep, sorry to say, a scary toxic mix of solvents, resins and plasticisers. Downright nasty.

The industry is changing though, thankfully. 3-Free brands (Toluene, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde free) have been around for years now and we’ve even progressed to 5-Free (Formaldehyde Resin and Camphor free in addition to the above).

So what exactly are these shady ingredients?

1. Toluene – a liquid toxic solvent that smells like paint thinner. Inhaling high levels is said to harm your nervous system, cause light-headedness and nausea. It may also cause birth defects and developmental problems to the unborn child if a pregnant woman is overexposed.

2. Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) – a commonly used plasticiser that has been linked to cancer. It has also been connected to birth defects in studies involving lab animals.

3. Formaldehyde – a commonly used chemical to preserve and embalm dead animals (and humans) – nice! Even its vapour can be irritating, triggering asthma. Formaldehyde has long been known as a human carcinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue).

4. Formaldehyde Resin – a derivative of Formaldehyde. Used in the production of coatings and adhesives. It’s not quite as toxic as it’s bad boy brother above but it’s still an allergen.

5. Camphor – a poison (yes, poison!) that can cause seizures and disorientation if used in large enough doses. It acts as a cover on your nails, starving them of nutrients and causes yellow staining.

So if you’re a frequent nail varnish user, there’s no excuse, get shopping. Here are some fab 5-Free brands to look out for:-

ZOYA - my personal 5-Free favourite and brand of choice for my kit. It goes on perfectly and stays flawless for ages. The colour range is amazing with hundreds of shades to choose from and new colours are released every season. It’s also vegan.
